I am noticing on many retro forums and groups growing numbers of enthusiasts asking what hardware can i run with xx version of windows or will this so and so work with xx version of windows.
Thought maybe this information might help! I didn’t go back earlier as hardly anyone ran earlier versions.
Let’s start off the list with :
Windows 3.0
- 8086/8088 processor or better
- 384K of free conventional memory (real mode), 1MB (Standard Mode), or 2MB (Enhanced Mode)
- Hard disk with 6-7MB of free space
- CGA/EGA/VGA/Hercules/8514/A/XGA graphics and an appropriate and compatible monitor
- MS-DOS version 3.1 or higher
Windows 3.x
System requirements for standard mode are:
- Intel 80286 (or higher) processor
- 1 MB or more of memory (640K conventional and 256K extended)
- 6.5 MB of free disk space (9 MB is recommended)
System requirements for enhanced mode are:
- Intel 80386 (or higher) processor
- 2 MB or more of memory (640K conventional and 1024K extended)
- 8 MB of of free disk space (10.5 MB is recommended)
Windows for Workgroups 3.11
The minimum client installation of Windows for Workgroups requires:
- 80286 microprocessor or better for version 3.1
- 80386sx microprocessor or better for version 3.11
- 2048 kilobytes (K) total memory for version 3.1
- 3 megabytes (MB) total memory for version 3.1 (2 MB with no network installed)
- 3 megabytes (MB) total memory for version 3.11 (4 MB is recommended)
- 6.2 MB of hard drive space (14.5 MB recommended)
The minimum server installation of Windows for Workgroups requires:
- 80386sx microprocessor or better
- 3072K total memory (4096K recommended)
- 3 megabytes (MB) total memory for version 3.1 (4 MB recommended)
- 3 megabytes (MB) total memory for version 3.11 (4 MB is recommended)
- 10.5 MB of hard drive space (14.5 MB recommended)
Windows 95
System requirements for installing Windows 95:
- Personal computer with a 386DX or higher processor (486 recommended)
- 4 megabytes (MB) of memory (8 MB recommended)
- Typical hard disk space required to upgrade to Windows 95: 35-40 MB The actual requirement varies depending on the features you choose to install.

Windows NT Workstation
- 12 MB of RAM

Windows NT Server
- 16 MB of RAM

Windows 98/98SE
- A personal computer with a 486DX 66 megahertz (MHz) or faster processor (Pentium central processing unit recommended).

Windows XP Home Edition are

Microsoft Windows 10 released July 29, 2015 has a fairly light processor footprint however requires a lot of RAM.

- 16 GB for 32 bit OS and 20 GB for 64-bit OS
- Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.o driver
- Display 800×600
